Beauty Questions, Answered – August 2016

Q: Help! Greasy sunscreen makes me break out. I want to be safe, but ugh!

Try powder SPF. It sops up oil and creates a barrier on the skin that blocks UV rays physically (not chemically, like traditional cream), explains NYC derm Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, M.D., PH.D. I am swearing by it.

Q: How can I wear metallic eye makeup without looking like a robot?

To soften gold or silver shadows; do a base shade first, says makeup artist Lucia Pieroni. At the Jason Wu fashion show, she did yellow shadow topped with gold; or white shadow topped with silver. Tap it on with your fingers to prevent glitter scatter.

Q: I’ve been thinking about making a drastic hair change. Do or don’t?

The Real Housewives of New York City star Ramona Singer told me that her short cut gave her “a confidence boost”. But I once chopped mine on a whim and hated it for a year. So I tell friends to answer these Q’s: Have you thought about it for a few weeks? Are you doing it because you want to, not because your stylist is bored? And can you commit to upkeep? Yes, yes and yes? Go for it!

Beauty Tips

Tackle frizz – The Hollywood way! Cregihton Bowman (he’s done Renne Zellweger’s hair) swears by Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding [$22 for 8 oz., missjessies.com]. And celeb stylist Louise Moon relies on a wax stick. In a pinch, I use lip balm.

Make a bun more fun. Wind a colorful strip of elastic (from the craft store) around a ponytail; twist into a bun and pin.

Use coconut milk (canned is fine) as lotion. It softens and smells yummy!
